When it comes to children’s health, dental care often takes a backseat to paediatric check-ups and vaccinations. For many parents, the focus tends to remain on visible aspects of growth and immunity, while oral health is often overlooked—sometimes due to uncertainty about when to begin or the assumption that milk teeth are temporary and less important.

“I honestly didn’t realise my baby needed to see a dentist so early. I thought we could wait until all the teeth came in,” says a young parent Hema, a Chennai-based IT Professional who has a three-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

Another parent Kavya, a Madurai-based homemaker shares a more concerning experience: “Since milk teeth fall out anyway, we didn’t think dental visits were urgent unless there was pain. But my four-year-old suddenly complained of severe toothache. When we rushed him to the dentist, we were shocked to learn he had cavities in nearly 10 teeth.” What began as a seemingly minor issue quickly turned into a stressful situation—highlighting how easily early signs can go unnoticed until they become acute.

Such experiences are not uncommon. Many parents only turn their attention to dental care when a child experiences visible discomfort, by which time the problem may have already progressed. The lack of early awareness, coupled with busy routines and competing health priorities, often delays timely intervention.

However, experts like Dr. B. Guhan, 4 Dentist Dental clinic in Chennai, advocate for proactive dental care starting as early as infancy. He stresses that parents should schedule their baby’s first dental visit as soon as the first tooth emerges—usually around six months of age. “Many parents feel that dental visits can wait until the child is older, especially since milk teeth will eventually fall out. But early dental care is essential—not just for treating problems, but for preventing them and guiding healthy oral development from the very beginning,” says Dr. Guhan.

These early check-ups are not merely precautionary, they play a crucial role in identifying and preventing potential dental issues at the earliest stages. While some dentists recommend biannual visits, Dr. Guhan suggests that a four-month interval is more effective, especially for young children. This shorter timeline ensures that any emerging problems, such as cavities or tooth fractures, are addressed before they progress into more severe conditions.

Early dental visits also help parents learn best practices for oral hygiene, monitor their child’s dental development, and mitigate habits like thumb-sucking, which could affect future alignment. Dr. Guhan provides practical insights into the importance of early dental care and explains how consistent monitoring can set the stage for strong oral health throughout childhood and beyond.
