Gastrointestinal health plays a vital role in a child’s growth and overall development, especially in the early years of life. From feeding and digestion to nutrient absorption, a healthy digestive system ensures that children gain weight appropriately and thrive physically and mentally. However, several gastrointestinal conditions are commonly seen in infants and young children, either from birth or as a result of changing food habits and lifestyle factors, and early recognition and timely management are key to preventing long-term complications.

The common childhood gastrointestinal diseases that we encounter are mainly gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, congenital anomalies, and food intolerance.

Congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal system can be seen right after birth or can be detected within the first month of life. Many times, the food passage has a faulty connection to the wind passage, or there is an obstruction somewhere along the gastrointestinal tract, or there is a lack of opening at the end of the gastrointestinal tract, or there is a faulty connection between the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary system. These are mostly detected within the first month of life because, without proper passage of food from mouth to anus, the child starts losing weight very quickly and may also develop abdominal distension due to non-passage of stool. Hence, these conditions need to be corrected early in life.

Reflux disease happens because there is a valve-like structure at the end of the oesophagus so that once food is eaten, it passes downwards only and does not come back. However, due to one cause or another, the sphincter may not be tight, so whenever the child feeds, some of the stomach contents are coughed back. Due to this repeated vomiting, the child may not get adequate nutrition and hence, over time, may become malnourished. It can be monitored by special investigations, and many times it improves with age or may need surgical correction.

Constipation is increasing more and more these days due to improper food habits in the younger generation. They rely more on processed foods, refined foods, and foods that do not have enough fibre. Hence, there is an increasing tendency for constipation. The treatment is simple but should be diligently followed for at least a few months so that there is complete resolution of the problem. A regular meal schedule and foods rich in fibre, such as raw fruits and vegetables, may gradually and definitely improve the situation. Adequate intake of liquids and water is also necessary.

Another problem encountered due to the urbanisation of our food habits today is the use of packaged and preserved foods. These come with many chemical preservatives, which not only reduce the normal bacterial flora that helps in maintaining a healthy gut but also induce an inflammatory response in the gastrointestinal system. This may cause allergies and lead to an unhealthy gut and, consequently, an unhealthy child.
