When I was growing up, my grandmother made sure I was always in the pink of health. Even at the slightest hint of a cold, she would come to my rescue with her homemade nuskas—and somehow, everything would be back to normal in no time. I’d like to believe that along with her love, she also passed down this treasure trove of wellness wisdom to me.
So here I am, sharing that goodness with you—ten tried-and-tested remedies straight from my dadi’s jholi of wisdom, with Ayurvedic insights from Dr Shashikant Rai, medical doctor at Prayagraj’s Jaggottam Ayurveda Panchkarma Centre:
- Amla works wonders for premature greying: Whether you include it in your diet or use it as a hair treatment, amla can help tackle those stubborn white strands. You can also infuse it in oil and massage it into your scalp before washing your hair. According to Dr Rai, amla contains almost all the six tastes in Ayurveda except salt, making it highly nourishing. He adds that it supports liver and gallbladder function while contributing to overall wellness.
- Almond oil is a simple fix for dark circles: Apply a few drops under your eyes and gently massage in circular motions for about 10 minutes. Wash your face afterward. Repeat this for a few days to see visible results. Dr Rai explains that dark circles are often linked to dryness and stress. In Ayurveda, stress is associated with aggravated Vata dosha, and oils are considered one of the best remedies to balance Vata. Almond oil helps reduce dryness around the eyes, improves circulation, and promotes better oxygenation in the area.
- A curd mask can help reduce acne: Mix a spoonful of curd with honey to make a smooth paste. Apply it to your face, leave it on for 20 minutes, and wipe off with a damp towel. Regular use over a week can show improvement. Dr Rai says acne is commonly associated with aggravated Pitta and Kapha doshas. According to him, curd helps soothe Pitta, while honey helps balance Kapha, making this combination beneficial from an Ayurvedic wellness perspective.
- Lemon juice helps tackle dandruff and hair fall: Among the many dandruff remedies, this one is quick and effective. Add a few drops of lemon juice to warm oil and massage it into your scalp before washing your hair.
- Ginger can ease headaches: Mix freshly grated ginger with a little water to form a paste and apply it to your forehead. It may cause a slight tingling sensation initially, but it can provide quick relief.
- Honey water can relieve constipation: Drinking a glass of warm water with honey before bedtime supports digestion and helps ease constipation.
- A mix of butter and sugar may help with migraines: This traditional remedy is believed to reduce migraine discomfort when consumed in small amounts.
- Lemon can help remove blackheads: Gently rub a slice of lemon on your nose for about 10–15 minutes to help reduce blackheads. Consistent use enhances results.
- For a cold, try honey and lemon in warm water: Add a spoonful of lemon juice and honey to warm water and drink it before bedtime. It’s a comforting remedy that often brings quick relief.
- Cinnamon works as a natural mouth freshener: Boil cinnamon (dalchini) in water and use it as a rinse whenever needed to keep bad breath at bay.
While these age-old remedies continue to be cherished across generations, Dr Rai emphasises that they are best viewed as wellness practices and not substitutes for medical treatment. Persistent or severe symptoms should always be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
