Non-dietary fasts are practices that involve abstaining from certain activities or behaviours rather than food and drink. These fasts are undertaken to achieve various physical, mental, or spiritual benefits. Examples include digital detoxes (avoiding screens and digital devices), social media fasts, talking fasts (periods of silence), and sensory fasts (avoiding stimuli like noise or artificial light). The effectiveness of non-dietary fasts varies based on the individual and the type of fast. Here are some common non-dietary fasts and their potential benefits:

  • Digital Detoxes: Abstaining from using digital devices like smartphones, computers, and TVs can reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance personal interactions. It can also help individuals become more mindful and present in their daily lives.
  • Social Media Fasts: Taking a break from social media platforms can improve mental health by reducing feelings of envy, loneliness, and anxiety. It allows people to engage more deeply in real-life activities and relationships.
  • Talking Fasts (Periods of Silence): Practicing silence can help in improving focus, enhancing self-awareness, and promoting mental clarity. It is often used in spiritual and mindfulness practices to foster inner peace and reflection.
  • Sensory Fasts: Reducing exposure to sensory inputs like noise, artificial light, or even certain types of music can help calm the mind and reduce overstimulation. This can lead to improved mental well-being and relaxation.
  • Media Fasts: Avoiding news, entertainment media, and other forms of passive consumption can help reduce mental clutter and information overload, leading to a clearer, more focused mind.
  • Behavioural Fasts: This includes abstaining from certain habits or behaviours like gossiping, complaining, or other negative actions. It can lead to improved interpersonal relationships and a more positive outlook. The effectiveness of these non-dietary fasts largely depends on the individual’s commitment and the context in which the fast is undertaken. Regular practice can lead to significant improvements in mental health, productivity, and overall well-being. However, the outcomes are subjective and can vary widely among individuals. Additionally, integrating these practices with other healthy lifestyle habits often maximises their benefits.

Delhi-based dietician Amrita Kumari, formerly associated with Primus Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi indicates that there are a few suggestions to enhance the practice:

Start Small: Begin with short, manageable periods (e.g., 1–2 hours daily) to build consistency.

Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve—reduced stress, better sleep, or improved focus.

Pair with Healthy Habits: Combine these fasts with balanced nutrition, hydration, and physical activity for holistic well-being.

Track Progress: Reflect on how these fasts impact your mood, productivity, and relationships.
