Climate change has become a significant, yet often overlooked, threat to child health, with its effects increasingly visible.

They are among the most vulnerable to the consequences of climate change due to their developing bodies, immune systems, and dependence on caregivers. The interplay between rising global temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, worsening air quality, and increasing natural disasters is creating a cascade of adverse health outcomes that disproportionately affect children. From physical health challenges such as malnutrition and respiratory issues to the mental health strain caused by displacement and insecurity, the impacts are wide-ranging and profound. Below, we explore how these interconnected factors directly threaten the well-being of children across the globe.

Temperature Extremes: Rising temperatures have led to a 1 percent increase in preterm births, which severely impacts neonatal survival. Warmer climates also fuel the spread of vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue, projected to affect an additional 4.7 billion people globally over the next 50 years. Furthermore, extreme heat and cold events are escalating cases of temperature-related stress.

Rainfall and Waterborne Diseases: Changes in precipitation patterns, especially untimely and excessive rainfall, combined with inadequate sanitation systems, have increased the prevalence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea, which are harder to manage and prevent.

Air Quality and Mucosal Health: Shifts in temperature and air quality deteriorate mucosal health, making children more susceptible to respiratory infections, eye irritation, and compromised immunity. Air pollution alone accounts for 16 precent of lung cancer deaths, 25 percent of COPD deaths, 17 percent of ischemic heart disease deaths, and 26 percent of respiratory infection deaths globally.

Food Insecurity: Crop failures caused by climate-induced droughts and heatwaves could leave an additional 122 million people malnourished by 2050, significantly increasing rates of undernutrition, stunting, and associated health issues.

Displacement and Mental Health: Between 2016 and 2021, 43.1 million children were displaced due to weather-related disasters—roughly 20,000 children per day. Displaced children face heightened vulnerability to abuse and exploitation, with 3–30 percent experiencing depression and 9–32 percent reporting anxiety.

Mortality from Climate Disasters: By 2050, floods are predicted to cause 8.5 million deaths globally, posing the highest acute risk of climate-induced mortality. Droughts, linked to extreme heat, could result in an additional 3.2 million deaths.

These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of climate change on child health, including improved healthcare systems, sanitation, food security, and mental health support for displaced children.
