In Ayurveda, traditional remedies are valued not only for their nutritional qualities but also for their ability to balance the doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha. Fermented rice water, a staple in beauty and wellness practices across various cultures, aligns well with ayurvedic principles. Prepared by soaking or boiling rice and then allowing it to ferment, it becomes enriched with vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that benefit both hair and skin. When used mindfully and with an understanding of one’s dosha, fermented rice water can offer deep nourishment and healing, explains a Mumbai-based Ayurvedic doctor Pragya Rao.
Ayurvedic Properties of Fermented Rice Water
According to Ayurveda, fermented foods and liquids like rice water acquire an amla (sour) taste due to fermentation. This process increases the bioavailability of nutrients, making them more potent and accessible for the body. The natural fermentation enhances rice water’s ability to balance kapha and strengthen hair and skin, provided it is used in moderation and tailored to individual dosha needs, she elaborates.
Benefits for Hair
Fermented rice water is particularly beneficial for those with kapha imbalances or individuals experiencing dull, heavy hair. The sourness of fermented rice water gently lifts kapha and revitalises hair. It contains inositol, a carbohydrate that helps repair damaged hair, supporting stronger and more resilient strands. In ayurveda, such rejuvenation aligns with the concept of keshya (beneficial for hair).
The amino acids and vitamins in fermented rice water deeply nourish the scalp and hair follicles, encouraging stronger, faster hair growth. By reducing breakage and split ends, it aids in achieving healthier, lustrous hair. The nutrients coat the hair shaft, which makes hair smoother, reduces frizz, and promotes manageability, particularly for kapha individuals whose hair may be prone to oiliness and heaviness.
Fermented rice water has natural anti-inflammatory properties that soothe scalp irritation, reducing dandruff and other scalp conditions. By supporting a balanced pH level, it fosters an ideal environment for hair health and growth.
Benefits for Skin
In Ayurveda, skin health is closely tied to internal wellness and the balance of doshas. Fermented rice water is rich in vitamins B, C, and E, which support skin vitality and are particularly beneficial for pitta skin issues like redness, inflammation, or sun sensitivity. Fermented rice water, in its amla form, is also beneficial for balancing oily kapha skin and addressing vata dryness.
The nutrients in fermented rice water improve elasticity and promote even skin tone. By reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation, it helps create a balanced and radiant complexion. Known for its ability to enhance the skin’s moisture barrier, fermented rice water keeps the skin hydrated, making it especially suitable for vata skin that tend towards dryness. Its cooling properties also calm pitta-related irritations, says the doctor.
Fermented rice water’s antioxidants combat free radicals that lead to aging, helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. This aligns with ayurveda’s focus on rasayana (rejuvenation) for a youthful complexion.
The anti-inflammatory properties make fermented rice water beneficial for calming skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, and acne. It can also help tighten pores and control excess oil, which is ideal for kapha skin types prone to oiliness.
To enhance the benefits of rice water, ayurveda emphasises the process of fermentation and maintaining a sattvic (pure) approach to its preparation. This involves allowing the rice water to ferment naturally, without exposure to impurities.
Ways to ferment rice
Rinse a cup of rice thoroughly to cleanse any impurities. Soak it in two cups of filtered water for 30 minutes, strain, and store the water. Let it ferment at room temperature for 24-48 hours.
To halt fermentation, lightly warm the water without boiling it excessively, as overheating could reduce the nutrient content.
Keep the fermented rice water in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Ayurvedic Application Tips
For Hair:
– After shampooing, apply the fermented rice water to the scalp and hair. Massage gently, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and rinse with lukewarm water. Using this 1-2 times a week can promote balanced and resilient hair.
For Skin:
– After cleansing, apply the fermented rice water using a cotton pad or by patting it gently onto your face. It can also be used as a base for face masks or diluted as a facial mist for cooling pitta skin types.
Dr Rao says, “Incorporating fermented rice water in an Ayurvedic routine offers numerous beauty benefits, from strengthening hair and promoting growth to hydrating and rejuvenating the skin. By understanding your dosha and customising usage accordingly, you can harness the natural properties of fermented rice water to enhance overall well-being and beauty.”
