In recent years, there has been a growing shift among parents and healthcare professionals toward natural, whole foods for infants. Paediatricians generally advise against the frequent use of commercially prepared instant cereals due to several health concerns. Although these products offer convenience, they may contain ingredients that are not optimal for a baby’s growth and development, says Dr. Anubha Shrivastava, professor and former head of the department of pediatrics at MLN Medical College, Prayagraj, who is also the in-charge of the Pediatric Nephrology Unit and the State Mentor for Newborn Services.

One of the primary reasons paediatricians discourage instant cereals is the presence of synthetic additives. “Many commercial cereals contain preservatives, flavour enhancers, and stabilisers to prolong shelf life, which may not be suitable for a baby’s delicate digestive system,” Dr. Shrivastava explains. Additionally, these cereals often contain artificial sweeteners or flavouring agents, which detract from the natural taste of food, potentially altering a child’s palate and preference for healthy, unprocessed options later in life. Another critical issue with instant cereals is their high sugar content. “Many of these products contain excessive sugars to make them more palatable, but this can have negative consequences,” Dr. Shrivastava points out.

Consuming sugary foods early in life can increase the risk of childhood obesity and dental problems and may even contribute to hyperactivity. Regular intake of sugar-laden cereals can also create a preference for sweet foods, making it more challenging for parents to introduce vegetables, fruits, and other wholesome foods into the child’s diet. Paediatricians encourage parents to opt for homemade alternatives, as many of these cereals can easily be prepared at home using fresh, natural ingredients. “Homemade cereals made from grains like oats, ragi, or rice, with added fruits or vegetables, provide a nutrient-rich and balanced meal without the unnecessary additives,” Dr. Shrivastava suggests.

Home-prepared meals also give parents greater control over portion sizes and ensure that the child receives freshly made, preservative-free food. However, Dr. Shrivastava acknowledges that in some situations, instant cereals can be used as a practical option. “It is important to be realistic as well,” she says. “When a child is hungry and you are pressed for time, it is better to use instant cereals in moderation than to leave the child starving.”

She emphasises that when opting for commercially available cereals, parents should carefully read labels to select products with minimal sugar, no artificial additives, and a focus on whole grains. Moderation and balance are key when navigating between convenience and nutrition. Dr. Shrivastava advises parents to ensure that instant cereals are not the primary food source but rather an occasional supplement. “It is essential to remember that nutrition in a baby’s early years lays the foundation for healthy growth. While instant cereals offer a quick fix, they should not replace the habit of providing fresh, homemade meals,” she explains.
