Many men are taught to stay silent about their feelings. But silence comes at a cost—to mental health, relationships and everyday

“I wasn’t taught to talk about my feelings. I was taught to solve problems and move on. Somewhere along the way, I forgot that I needed someone to listen too,” says Rohit, 35, IT professional (name changed).

“The only time I realised I needed help was when my wife said, ‘You’re always angry, but never tell me what’s really bothering you.’ That’s when I considered therapy,” says Amit, 41, entrepreneur (name changed).

For generations, men have been conditioned to believe that vulnerability is incompatible with masculinity. Boys are often told to “be strong”, “don’t cry”, and “handle it yourself”. Over time, these messages become deeply ingrained, making emotional silence appear normal—even admirable. Yet behind that silence often lies stress, loneliness and unspoken pain.

Dr. Siddharth Chowdhury, consultant neuropsychiatrist and co-founder of men’s health platform RxMen, believes this conditioning begins early and follows many men into adulthood. “Men are taught not to express, not to share and to keep everything within because that’s considered the manly thing to do. That upbringing alone is enough for many people to collapse under the weight of those expectations.”

He points out that many men do not seek professional help voluntarily. “A large number of men come to therapy because a girlfriend or wife insisted—not because they themselves wanted to be there.”

When Silence Turns Into Anger

Suppressing emotions rarely makes them disappear. Instead, they often emerge in different forms—irritability, emotional withdrawal, aggression or strained relationships. Dr. Chowdhury likens it to a volcano waiting to erupt. “If emotions are never talked about or vented, they keep building up. Many angry reactions, road rage incidents and unnecessary conflicts often come from years of emotional suppression,” he says.

Rather than sadness, emotional distress in men frequently presents as frustration or anger, making it harder for families to recognise that the underlying issue is emotional pain.

The Cost of Staying Silent

The consequences extend beyond mental health. Emotional suppression can affect marriages, parenting, friendships and even physical well-being. Men who struggle to express themselves often find it difficult to ask for support, creating a cycle of isolation.

Breaking the Cycle

According to Dr. Chowdhury, encouraging men to speak openly doesn’t require grand gestures—it starts with creating safe, judgement-free conversations at home, among friends and in the workplace. “Conversation starts conversation. When one person opens up and isn’t laughed at or judged, it gives others permission to do the same,” he adds. He believes emotional openness must be modelled rather than merely encouraged. “If we want men to talk, we need to stop treating vulnerability as weakness,” he says.
