Acid reflux, typically under-reported and under-diagnosed, has become a worldwide issue. Commonly known as GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), it is an illness where the acid contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus causing heartburn, belching, chest pain, and other adverse effects. The intensity of these symptoms varies from person to person, while some may feel a mild discomfort, others may suffer from essential pain.

There are a number of reasons why acid reflux occurs in an individual. One of the most common reasons is the weakening or malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter that leads to the backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus. Obesity, pregnancy, smoking, hiatal hernia, some medications, and the consumption of trigger foods like spicy food, citrus, chocolate, or caffeine are some of the reasons for acid reflux.

How Severe Acid Reflux Can Be and Why We Don’t Take It Seriously

“While it is a common affliction, acid reflux is not always accorded the respect it deserves because its symptoms are often mistaken for less serious conditions such as overeating or stress,” says Delhi-based dietician Amrita Kumari, formerly associated with Primus Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi. Even worse, most of its victims misdiagnose the symptoms with over-the-counter drugs that temporarily mask the problem, rather than consulting a doctor. This leads to a cycle of neglect and further exacerbation of the problem until it becomes seriously debilitating.

Untreated acid reflux in the long term can cause damage to the lining of the esophagus, chronic inflammation, and cell changes called Barrett’s esophagus. It also increases the risk of esophagus cancer. It can also cause other disorders such as asthma, chronic cough, injury to the vocal cords, disruption of sleep, and even dental problems due to the acidic composition of the gastric juices that reflux.

Chief Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Some of the most common acid reflux symptoms include heartburn, food or sour liquid regurgitation, burning sensation in the throat or chest, dysphagia, persistent cough, sore throat, hoarseness, and bloating. It is also frequent for people with acid reflux to wake up during the night feeling pain and discomfort.

Devising the Relationship between Lifestyle and Acid Reflux

Kumari shares, lifestyle is one of the key factors in the facilitation or prevention of acid reflux. Unhealthy eating habits, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, physical inactivity, irregular diet, and excessive stress are all related to the severity of acid reflux. Sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle increases the risk of the disease. The majority of the patients suffering from acid reflux have chronic discomfort, sleepless nights, food anxiety, and limitation of activities of daily living. In such a scenario taking medical assistance at the right time becomes all the more necessary in order to have a comfortable life.

Severe Acid Reflux medical treatment

Medical interventions include prescription drugs such as proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor blockers. In extreme cases, physicians may recommend surgery if medication fails.

Natural Remedies to Manage Acid Reflux

A number of natural cures can be used to fight acid reflux. Some of them are taking apple cider vinegar, chewing gum to stimulate saliva production that can neutralise acid in the stomach, taking baking soda, or taking ginger. Kumari elaborates:

–  Apple Cider Vinegar: While some individuals find relief, its acidity could potentially worsen symptoms in others. The mechanism is not fully understood or universally effective.

–  Chewing Gum: Stimulates saliva production, which can help neutralise acid. This is a generally accepted mild remedy.

–  Baking Soda: Sodium bicarbonate can neutralise stomach acid, but its use should be cautious and infrequent due to potential side effects (alkalosis, sodium overload).

–  Ginger: Has anti-inflammatory properties and may aid digestion, potentially providing some relief. These cannot replace prescribed medication without consulting a physician.

Adhering to a well-balanced diet, exercising every day, giving up smoking and alcohol, reducing the consumption of trigger foods, changing sleeping positions, reducing stress levels – all these small changes can have a dramatic impact on controlling acid reflux symptoms and avoiding further harm.

Discussing the Myths of Acid Reflux

Unlike what people think, acid reflux is not only for adults but also for children. Another myth is that heartburn is associated with heart diseases, which is not the case. Acid reflux is caused by digestive problems and not cardiovascular.

Conquering the Ignorance of Acid Reflux

Despite its prevalence and severity, public awareness of acid reflux is surprisingly low. Closing the gap between widespread myths and fact about acid reflux is central to battling its rise. Acid reflux might be a minor ailment but it can prove to be hazardous if not treated on time. It is thus important to encourage greater awareness, adopt preventive measures, seek professional medical guidance, and make advisable investments in treatments for a healthier digestive system and overall health. Remember, the healing process begins with awareness and recognition.
