Chennai-based clinical psychologist Shruti Mohan on navigating modern work pressures, setting boundaries, and protecting personal well-being

In today’s hyper-connected world, the lines between work and personal life are increasingly blurred. With digital access, remote work, and rising professional demands, many individuals find it difficult to truly “switch off.” This constant state of engagement can impact mental well-being, relationships, and overall quality of life. In this expert Q&A, Mohan addresses key concerns around work–life balance, offering practical insights into building boundaries, recognising early warning signs, and managing competing responsibilities.

Why do so many professionals feel constantly “on,” even after work hours?

A persistent sense of being “on” is often linked to role spillover and cognitive carryover. Even after work hours, the mind continues to process unfinished tasks, anticipated demands, or performance-related concerns. In digitally connected environments, the absence of clear temporal and spatial boundaries further reduces opportunities for psychological disengagement, which is essential for recovery.

How can one create boundaries when working from home or in demanding jobs?

Boundary formation requires intentional structuring rather than reliance on motivation. This includes:

  • Defining fixed work start and end times
  • Creating physical or symbolic separation between work and personal space
  • Limiting after-hours work-related communication where possible

Consistency is critical. Boundaries are not established through one-time decisions but through repeated behavioural patterns.

Is work–life balance realistic, or should we aim for work–life integration?

The concept of work–life balance is evolving. For many individuals, strict separation may not be feasible. A more realistic goal in certain contexts is work–life integration, provided there is:

  • Adequate recovery time
  • Flexibility without continuous overlap
  • Clear prioritisation of personal well-being

The concern is not overlap per se, but chronic lack of disengagement.

What are early warning signs that work is taking over personal well-being?

Early indicators that work is negatively impacting well-being include:

  • Persistent mental preoccupation with work outside working hours
  • Irritability, reduced patience, or emotional exhaustion
  • Disruption in sleep or routine
  • Reduced engagement in previously meaningful non-work activities

These signs reflect reduced recovery and increasing strain on regulatory capacity.

How can working parents manage guilt and exhaustion effectively?

For working parents, guilt and exhaustion often stem from competing role demands and internalised expectations. Management involves:

  • Recalibrating expectations toward what is realistically sustainable
  • Prioritising consistency over perfection in both roles
  • Establishing predictable routines to reduce decision fatigue
  • Recognising that emotional availability is more impactful than constant availability

Addressing these concerns requires both cognitive reframing and practical restructuring of daily demands.
